I’m Going To Make This Place Your Home

I'm Going To Make This Place Your Home

Yes, I have been plastered in front of the TV every evening for the past two weeks watching the Olympics. I love them! For two weeks every four years I suddenly care about water polo, team handball, swimming, archery, and a couple of other sports I didn’t even know existed. Has there always been Men’s Field Hockey?

I screamed when Alex Morgan headed home victory in the 123rd minute! And of course – I have missed very little of the “Fierce Five’s” gymnastics triumph in London.

Although I hate commercials – NBC struck it perfectly by choosing Phillip Phillips “Home” as the official song for USA gymnastics. So, every commercial break during the Olympics features a gymnastics montage set to “Home.” Every time, it hits me in the throat, and I can’t help but getting choked up.

Settle down, it’ll all be clear
Don’t pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found

Just know you’re not alone
Cause I’m going to make this place your home

I got sucked in. I bought the song on iTunes (#1 song on the charts) – and I looked up the lyrics which only reinforced my love for the song.

I have shared with all of you before that the Thomas 5 (not quite the Fierce Five) will be hitting the road in September. We are a family without a house – without a home base! The stuff is in storage, and we are moving forward into the next few months embracing the mystery and opportunity of not having a plan. There are plenty of demons that have filled us with fear, and have tried to drag us down, but we are going to make this place our home.

Thinking of the Olympics and thinking of our journey has reminded me that home is indeed right here – in this place. The gymnastics team was able to take a foreign place and turn it into their home. They set up shop, got comfortable, found their peace – and went to work.

I am looking forward to the journey ahead. Our heads will seldom rest in the same place from night to night. There will be no routine or familiarity. Lots of hours in the car, lots of make shift meals – and a lot of unscripted detours.

It is really weird to genuinely look a few months out and not know where we will be. But wherever it is – we will be together as a family – listening to our inner YES.

With that – we can make any place our home!

  1. Go Baby!!!!! Hanging right with you;)

  2. TOTALLY hanging right with you, as SF says! I bought that song AND the ringtone and so now my morning alarm is to that song (alternated with Mumford and Sons “Awake My Soul”!). :) I am so thrilled for your family’s adventures and the deepening sense of home that will undoubtedly occur – naturally!

  3. “Home is where your heart is” has never resonated so much for me, more than it has this summer. It really is a true statement. But more so I have realized your heart can be in so many different places at one time – it doesn’t need just ONE place to call home. Deep gratitude and grace has allowed MY overflowing heart to be in many homes at the same time even if my body is in another. SO much love to the FABULOUS Thomas 5 on this journey!! xoxo

  4. Take notes! I feel a book coming on . . .

‘One family’s journey into the mystical heart of themselves . . . Oh, and America too’
